Al Spencer began his apprenticeship as a journeyman locksmith in 1972 earning $1.85 per hour long before the term "lock technician" became the re-engineered title in the profession. Within a year, he became a store manager for a local safe and lock company.

In 1976, he decided to launch his own business from the basement of his father's house. With nothing more than a van and a bag of tools, Spencer's Safe & Lock was off and running—duplicating keys, installing deadbolts and Medeco™ Locks, providing automotive services, and opening safes. He provided many of the same products and services he offers today to the residential and commercial market in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area.
In 1978, Al opened his first storefront in Herndon, Virginia, and expanded his services beyond northern Virginia to Maryland and Washington, DC.
